Abstract

The study examines the influence of token economy and cognitive restructuring techniques on absenteeism among senior secondary school students in Malumfashi Zonal Education Quality Assurance. The study was guided by two objectives followed by the corresponding null hypotheses. The study adopted quasi-experimental design that uses non randomized pre-test, post-test control group.  The population of the study consist of 6,176 senior secondary school two (SS II) students. Purposive sampling technique was employed in selecting36 students (12) for Token Economy, 12 for Cognitive Restructuring Technique and 12 for control Group). Two instruments; School Absenteeism Behaviour Questionnaire (SABQ) and Class Attendance Register were used for collecting data. The reliability of SABQ was ascertain using test re-test and the co-efficient result of .61 was obtained. The statistical tools employed for testing the hypotheses were Independent samples t-test and the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Results revealed that, both token economy and cognitive restructuring technique were significant in reducing absenteeism behaviour among senior secondary school students in Malumfashi Zonal Education Quality Assurance. The study recommends among others that school psychologists, counsellors, teachers, and administrators should use both token economy and cognitive restructuring technique in managing absenteeism behaviour among secondary school students.
