Abstract

This study examined the effect of assertive training on self – esteem among primary school pupils in Gwarzo education zone, Kano state, Nigeria. A quasi – experimental design of pre-test, post-test only was adopted for the study. Ten (10) pupils were purposefully selected out of those identified with low self – esteem in the study area. Five (5) of the selected samples were male and the other five were female (5). The selected samples were exposed to the training programme of eight weeks using assertive training. The instrument used for data collection was Pupils’ Self – Esteem Scale. The items of the instrument were adopted from the Rosenberg Self – Esteem Scale (1965) which has ten (10) items and scored on a four-point Likert scale. Independent samples t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that significant differential effect of assertive training does not exist on self – esteem of primary school pupils based on their gender (p = 0.822) and based on their different age brackets (p = 0.240). Based on the findings, it was concluded that assertive training had significant effect in enhancing the self – esteem of primary school pupils of different age brackets and across gender. It was therefore recommended that school counsellors should be encouraged to apply assertive training in enhancing the self – esteem of primary school pupils.
